WRITINGI’m excited to participate in the Writer’s Digest Virtual Conference for Mysteries and Thrillers, this weekend. My current long-form project is a murder mystery set in Napa (think Knives Out meets Agatha Christie). Hoping this conference gives me the courage to sit down and get stuck into the plot, without a fear of fetching something up. Making up stories is hard!

READINGTo set the mood for the thriller conference, I just started Alex Michaelides The Silent Patient, and after the first 48 pages I am HOOKED. I love the short chapters and conversational feel between the narrator and the reader. I totally feel like the author is in control and I can’t wait to see what lies around the corner at The Grove (mental health center where the novel is set). Fun fact, my Aunt Blaine recommended this book to me years ago. Hi Aunt Blaine!! I was worried this novel might be too dark, or too creepy, but so far, it’s just downright compelling.

GROWINGSpring has finally sprung in Washington, and I have baby radishes and arugula poking their heads through my garden soil. My tomato starts are getting taller by the day, crowding my windowsill. Today, I moved a recent of lettuce starts out to containers on my back porch. They’ve got a few true leaves, which is a sign that they’re ready to leave the nest (windowsill).

EATINGCabbage has been on sale at the grocery story recently, so I’m leaning into recipes that utilize this hearty brassica. On Monday, we had chicken cordon bleu with roasted cabbage (see https://the-wildcarrot.com/home/2018/11/19/roasted-cabbage-with-crispy-fennel-and-balsamic-drizzle for a similar cabbage recipe). Last night, we had steak fajitas with a tex-mex slaw (cabbage, green onion, jalapeno and taco-seasoning-infused coleslaw dressing). Yum! Cabbage on!

DRINKINGWhen my mom and I visited Napa last month, I picked up my allocation from Frog’s Leap winery. I customized it to include three bottles of 2 0 2 1 L A G R E N O U I L L E R O U G A N T É, Frog’s Leap limited rose wine. It’s a very delicate, round rose perfect for afternoon sipping. Fun fact, the name means The Blushing Frog! How cute is that? Not so fun fact, it’s already sold out. The two bottles I have left in the cellar will have to tide me over until next year!

ANNOYED/FRUSTRATED WITHBirds. They keep eating my vegetable starts that I transfer out to my raised beds. I could put cloches on them, but then I have to monitor how hot they get throughout the day when springtime sunshine beams down on them. Woe is me. And the starts turned bird food.

DELIGHTED BYThe baby blooms of my cherry trees in my front yard. I love to see my driveway adorned in pink. Also, Wendy’s chicken nuggets. I treated myself for lunch yesterday and they were as good as I remembered from childhood.

WATCHINGI’m 8 episodes in to Poker Face, a new series on Peacock that follows Charlie as she moves across America unwinding murders one town at a time. It’s an interesting story structure, first you see the murder and how it happened, then you watch Charlie figure it out. In a way, it’s like reading a whodunnit backwards, or at least out of order. Natasha Lyonne (Charlie) is terrific, so she’s sustaining me, but I wonder how long this series can last since there isn’t much continuity between episodes and the weekly formula is pretty much the same.

THINKING ABOUTJob prospects, whether or not I cut my hair too short, if I should go back to blonde, turning 30 next week, the load of laundry in my washing-machine that’s been sitting wet for over a day.
